Food Systems Support Project (FSSP) Additional Financing

About the Project

This project supports 10,000 smallholder farmers (55% women, 30% youth) in the Njombe and Kilimanjaro Regions to enhance horticultural production and marketing, focusing on potatoes and ginger. It addresses challenges linked to COVID-19, gender inequality, and climate change while fostering sustainable practices and community resilience.

Key Components:

  1. Productivity and Sustainability:
    • Train farmers in Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and climate-smart agriculture.
    • Improve irrigation systems to cover 5,000 hectares.
    • Establish on-farm post-harvest centers for better storage and processing.
  2. Market Access:
    • Create a potato processing hub and promote branded products like packaged potatoes and processed ginger.
    • Link farmers to digital marketplaces and business development services.
    • Advocate for policies that support fair trade and reduce barriers for smallholders.
  3. Resilience Building:
    • Strengthen MVIWATA’s capacity to manage shocks and risks.
    • Support farmers in diversifying crops and improving irrigation to ensure year-round production.
